Proxy voting
If you’re unable to vote in person on polling day, you can ask someone you trust to vote on your behalf. This is called a proxy vote.
You can apply to vote by proxy for one election, a specific period, or permanently.
A proxy can either vote on your behalf at your polling station or by post.
You can only apply for a proxy vote under certain circumstances, including:
- Being away on polling day
- Having a medical issue or disability
- Not being able to vote in person because of work or military service
Apply to vote
There are two ways to apply for a proxy vote for an election:
The completed proxy forms can be printed out and returned to Electoral Services by post, or an image of the signed form can be emailed to elections@crawley.gov.uk.
You must apply by 5pm, six working days before election day. An elector can act as a proxy for only 4 voters (two domestic and two overseas).
After you've applied
We'll confirm to you and your proxy that your proxy arrangement is in place. We’ll send a proxy poll card to the person you nominated with details of how to vote.
Your nominated person must vote at your polling station. They cannot vote on your behalf at their own polling station if it's different to yours.
Proxy voting by post
If your proxy is unable to get to your polling station to cast your vote they can apply to vote on your behalf by post. This is known as a postal proxy.
Your proxy should contact elections@crawley.gov.uk or call 01293 438572 before the deadline for postal votes to arrange this.
